Mrs Nerd

It’s bit hard to write about yourself so this is Mr Nerd writing Mrs Nerd’s little bit There’s no real way to simply sum up Mrs Nerd- she’s awesome. So good in fact I saw her love and passion in everything and that’s when I went and created the Wonder Emporium for her because there’s simply nobody else you want helping you to make your Special Day amazing! Plus she’s good enough to put up with me! lol

She’s friendly, funny, creative, helpful and wonderful so get in touch with her ASAP so she can make your day unforgettable

Mr Nerd

How to describe Mr Nerd our Head Nerd Wrangler? Different is probably most apt. He’s a Design Professional (2D, 3D, Video and Web), an IT Engineer and also a good old fashioned Engineer so he’s just as happy working on a car or one of the Sinclair C5’s as he is designing your awesome Wedding Stationery, the website or an animated save the date for you.

Nerd Wedding

All About us and Our Wedding

Our Very Nerdy Wedding

Thanks for popping in to find out more about us and our Wedding- it really plays a massive part in what the Wonder Emporium is and why it exists as it is.

we aren’t your ‘run of the mill’ couple

First of all let’s start by saying myself and Mr Nerd aren’t your ‘run of the mill’ couple. We always like to do things a little differently no matter what it is and that applied in droves to our Wedding Day. To give you an example, let’s use our cats. Most people name cats with names like ‘Blinky’, ‘Tiger’, ‘Felix’ etc. That’s a bit dull so we have Travis (after Travis Pastrana from the Nitro Circus and if you meet him you’ll know why), Pinky, Box Rat and Sebby (also known as Vader on his good days). Not quite run of the mill.

named after Travis Pastrana from the Nitro Circus

That then goes into almost everything- our bin? It’s a T.A.R.D.I.S. A magic eight ball governs our social life and Mr Nerd’s actual nickname is ‘the Nerd’, his old companies all had Nerd in their title with his job title being ‘Chief Nerd’. Right now he’s been demoted somewhat and is only ‘Head Nerd Wrangler’ lol.

and spend far more time thinking about mischief

We like to always have fun, not take life too seriously and spend far more time thinking about mischief than should be good for you.

Now, let’s start telling you a little about Our Wedding.

We Love Video!

And we love video to help show you how are Wedding was a bit different. Above is our Save the Date that was then shown off on our Wedding Web Site in the Header. Trust me, it certainly raised a few eye brows but, most importantly, got everyone VERY intrigued as to what we had planned. He actually threw this together very quickly while I was sitting there without me evenrealising what he was doing lol.

Mr Nerd's Seal of Rassilon lapel pin

The Venue and Date

The way we did things we actually and went and talked to Venues first to gauge prices but most importantly to get an idea of what dates were available and how the price affected the date. We’re not tight or anything but the difference between 1 date and another can be in the thousands!

shop around for your Venue

It really is worth mentioning just how important it is to shop around for your Venue and to try the places out first if they do food and things on normal days just so you can get an idea of things. Remember, people don’t mind driving a little distance to get to a Wedding Venue so don’t rule out places that are a little further away, you can even put on a bus or a few mini buses on if it’s needed, it’s doubtful they’ll affect the price of things by a large amount.

a few venues who demanded we use their set menu and choices

You also need to check on their menu, we encountered a few venues who demanded we use their set menu and choices. Mr Nerd and I are both big foodies and we knew the food we wanted so we got rid of the venues who thought it appropriate to dictate to us what we  would and wouldn’t eat leaving only the ones who had great chef’s who could prepare anything we asked for.

The difficult bit though is choosing the final one

The difficult bit though is choosing the final one. Luckily there was only 1 who ticked all of our boxes making the decision ALOT easier. We threw some final dates their way, looked at prices and then decided on a Winter Wedding in December which suited our budget best plus we both liked the idea of a Winter Wedding.

We won’t go into detail on our actual Venue because they kind of buggered up some pretty major things but, needless to say, everyone still had a ball of a time.

The Themes

Choosing a Wedding Theme is very, very important because it’s going to set the stage and mood for everything else that follows. A theme should be something both you and your other half enjoy and if you can’t decide on just 1 then have 2!

set the stage and mood for everything else that follows

A mistake with choosing a Wedding theme is thinking it’s going to interfere with things like your Bridal Colours and flowers. This really isn’t the case because you only pick the elements out of the theme that our important to you. Those elements are the ones you then incorporate into everything.

only pick the elements out of the theme that our important to you

With the pair of us we simply couldn’t decide on a single theme- Mr Nerd LOVES Doctor Who but I, on the other hand, LOVE Marvel Comics. From the outside this might seem like a set of themes that wouldn’t work together in any, way shape or form but, trust us, they work very well together and you’ll see that once you see invites, Orders of Service, Our Cake, my shoes etc etc etc.

The Cake

A Wedding Cake is a little like chalk to cheese to people. Some people really want a beautiful cake but other’s are quite happy with a trifle from Tesco’s and prefer to focus on other things. I’m one of the first types as I’m a very keen baker and cake maker and, at one point many moons ago, even tried to set out becoming a professional but sadly other things got in the way.

A Wedding Cake is a little like chalk to cheese to people

Your cake has to speak about you and your partner. It can tell a story, it can be used to show off any number of things and, when done right, is the biggest focal at your Wedding Venue (apart from you lol) so it really is worthwhile having a long think about exactly what you want in your cake.

is the biggest focal at your Wedding Venue

I’m forever reading posts in Wedding Groups about cakes and people slamming Cake Artists for prices- this is so unfair and it’s extremely nasty beyond anything else. What you’re saying is “your skills and your time and worth anything”- imagine if your Boss said that to you? You wouldn’t be very impressed would you? Not to mention cakes are not cheap to make and I’m speaking about personal experience here when I say this. Good flour, chocolate, fondant, creams, high quality colourings, specialist equipment are all very expensive and I’d estimate that our cake probably cost nearly £200 in raw materials alone. If you aren’t too bothered about your cake then don’t pay a professional but please, please do not post about them being ‘rip offs’ and the like. Cake Makers and Artists work very, very hard and contrary to common belief make very little money out of their love.

people slamming Cake Artists for price

Being a baker myself and having a massive interest in it as a hobby I knew exactly who I wanted to make our cake because she’s quite simply- AMAZING! And that person is the award winning Sandra Clennel from Sugar Fun Cake Artistry here in Consett. We’re providing some links to her work because it’s fantastic. The cake meant so much to me that before anything else happened (before invites or anything else) I went and spoke to Sandra to make sure she could make our Cake on the date we had…luckily, she was free!

The Flowers

Well, what’s a Wedding without beautiful flowers? Because we were aiming to do things that little bit differently I needed a florist to compliment everything we were doing. This is actually alot harder than it sounds. Many florists tend to be very traditional when it comes to things like Weddings and don’t like to leave their comfort zone because it’s unfamiliar but more importantly, because they aren’t 100% sure of the styles they don’t want to make a mistake for the big day.

I needed a florist to compliment everything we were doing

Luckily we have a few florists local to us who are all lovely and I set about meeting up and having a coffee with all of them just so I could figure out who was the best fit for our Day. After quite a few meetings I eventually met Julie- the Enchanted Florist (the name kind of shows she likes a challenge) and we hit it off straight away and we almost started planning everything in that first meeting before I reeled myself back in lol.

Julie- the Enchanted Florist

You really must look for a florist you’re very comfortable with and who you have immediate trust with. If you read Wedding horror stories you’ll notice one of the top ones are the flowers going wrong. You don’t want that worry, find a florist you have absolute faith and trust in to handle everything and one who won’t dictate to you as to what you can or can’t do.

One of our Table Arrangements

The Photographer

I can’t stress enough just how important a Wedding Photographer is, the horror stories I’ve read about people using their ‘best friend’s cousin’, ‘ their brother’s mate’ etc who have gone and completely mucked up every single photograph at someone’s Wedding leaving them with absolutely nothing. If you’re paying for a photographer please make sure they’re a professional, not someone who does it ‘on the side’ or a DJ who’s decided he can be a Wedding Photographer having watched a professional take shots. Hire a professional who does it as their full time career- there’s a reason they’re professionals and reason they can do it full time.

I can’t stress enough just how important a Wedding Photographer is

With ourselves we opted to use the power of Google to hunt out some photographers who were relatively local to us. We found lots and lots but narrowed them down after Mr Nerd had looked through the style of photography different photographers did. His only criteria was no ‘soft focus’ because he didn’t want the pictures looking like something from the 1980’s lol.

met David Webb and we both immediately decided he was the man for the job

We had a few other photographers come to our house to meet us before we met David Webb and we both immediately decided he was the man for the job. Very likable, very friendly and very professional, David is an absolutely top guy and we would recommend him to anyone. You won’t find many people so dedicated that they turn up on your Wedding Day without a single excuse despite their Wife having taken seriously ill the night before and taken into hospital. David is that type of guy, 110% reliable and his work is flawless. He also joined in the celebrations at every step of the day and we now consider him a friend, not just our Photographer.

The Church

With us there really wasn’t a choice here, being brought up in Ebchester I had always wanted to be married at St Ebba’s in Ebchester and Mr Nerd didn’t really have much choice in that lol. There’s lots of Churches and registry offices around our area of all denominations and they’re all very, very pretty so if I hadn’t had my heart set on St Ebba’s we actually would have been spoiled for choice. Because we live in Shotley Bridge but were getting married in Ebchester we had to get our Banns read twice, once at the Church just over the road from us and again at St Ebba’s- no hardship at all though as both Churches are attended by lovely people.

I had always wanted to be married at St Ebba’s in Ebchester

I really must make a point here about mentioning the Reverend who married us, Rev. David Clew, who was quite simply, fabulous. Extremely open minded, very keen to allow us to have the service any way we wanted as long as a few things were included to tick all the traditional boxes for a Wedding. He’s an exceptional man and a real asset to the Church but he’s sadly moved on to greener pastures and I wish all Vicars were the same as him.

St Ebba's, Ebchester

Setting the Stage

So everything is in position, we know the where, we know the times, we know who’s doing what and now it’s time to start letting everyone know about the day.

Save the Date and Website

Sadly we took the website down a few months ago because everyone already had copies of photographs etc so we can’t actually show you it. You can see our save the date at the top of the page and the website matched the themes giving everyone all the details they needed until their invites got to them. It also served to handle all our RSVP’s and give people far more information on everything like nearby Hotels, B&B’s, history of the area and the Church, gift list (or lack of it lol) and lots of other things. A real time saver and everyone really appreciated being able to visit the site and have any question answered online.

Day Time Invites

I should say that we didn’t plan to do everything ourselves initially because we work pretty long hours so at first we did the usual hunting around looking for things. Because I’d chosen the main Wedding Colours I let MR Nerd get his way with the Day Time invites- Doctor Who themed. Annoyingly, Mr Nerd is a perfectionist (and worked on Doctor Who) so nothing we found was right. We spotted some T.A.R.D.I.S invites from different places but they were either stupidly priced or had massive issues like the wrong font for the Police Box writing, the doors were at the wrong aspect ratios or the blue of the T.A.R.D.I.S was wrong. It was at this point Mr Nerd opened up Illustrator and started designing them.

This allowed us total flexibility in the design but most importantly, allowed him to get the design right for us. He added in Galifreyan saying ‘I will love you through all of space and time’, a number of funnier Doctor quotes but finished everything off so that the invite inside had a very traditional look despite being totally out there! lol.

The Evening Invites

Mr Nerd had his say on the Day Time invites so now it was my turn! Lol. I say my turn, Mr Nerd just knew the Evening invites had to be Marvel themed and as usual he went to town on them. Instead of a simple invite he decided to turn things into our own Comic including both of us as our favourite Marvel Characters!

the Evening invites had to be Marvel themed

To say the invites went down a storm would be an understatement. The messages we received, the comments and everything else made Mr Nerd’s hard work really worthwhile. We even went to the trouble of sending everyone who got a main day time invite one for the evening as well to make sure they got themselves in the mood for everything we had planned lol.

You can’t ever forget that your invites are completely going to set the mood for your Wedding. They’re an advert letting people know exactly what’s happening and just like any advert you have to use them to capture people’s imagination, to put a smile on their faces but above all else, just get them excited for the day. Excitement will always turn into unforgettable times when it comes to a Wedding, the more excited they are, the better the day will be.

The Final Touches

We had everything set now, Venue, Date, Church, Flowers, Photographer and the invites out with everyone with the website collecting RSVP’s so it was now time to start getting the smaller details for the day done.

You should never miss out on the finer details, small things are what makes something unforgettable, your attention to detail will pay dividends in everyone’s minds when they see the trouble you’ve gone to to make the day unforgettable.

Shoes

I’d say MY shoes but it wasn’t just me lol. You’ll see my Wedding shoes in the picture, these are what I wore to actually get married in and yes, they’re a comic strip hehe. I didn’t have the one pair though, imagine being stuck in some uncomfortable heels for the entire day and night? Yeah, I didn’t think that’d be overly clever either so I had another pair of shoes made for the evening do but these ones as Converse Flat Tops all done as a Doctor Who theme (you’ll see them in the full gallery).

I didn’t stop there though, kids hate dressing up so why not inject a bit of fun into their outfit? For our Paige Boy and one of my Bridesmaids (both 12 at the time) I also had pairs of custom ‘sneakers’ made up. Doctor Who theme for Lea (the Bridesmaid) and a pair of Marvel’s Avengers ones for Jake (the Paige Boy). Needless to say, they brought a smile to everyone’s faces and we had 2 comfortable, smiling kids on top of it.

The Groomsmen

Everyone, of course, had matching suits (all in Doctor Who Blue) but that’s a bit too main stream so for the Best Man, Chris went and had a waistcoat made as a comic strip as well (John the Best Man also loves Marvel). Everyone then had a lapel pin based on a Doctor Who Character and Chris even got himself a Timelord Fob Watch and a coat to match David Tenent’s coat worn in Doctor Who (it wasn’t the best though lol). Again, all of these little touches mounted up to greatness. Doctor Who wasn’t in everyone’s faces, nor was Marvel but every single person could spot the theme from the smaller things.

My Wedding Shoes

Venue & Tables

To get the venue all finished we used a few things all done to our themes. We designed some Custom Sweetie Bags with the T.A.R.D.I.S on the front – something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue all in a Sweetie Bag lol. All the Table Place Names were personalised allowing us to add in nicknames and things, they were also designed in Doctor Who Blue and the T.A.R.D.I.S font.

Menu’s are a little main stream so we used Table Talkers. These served the purpose of the Table Name, Menu and also something for people to read and have a laugh at. Every single one was designed to factor in either a Marvel character or Doctor Who character with a little info on the character, why myself or Chris loved them, a little story about us (different one on each table) and the menu. We opted for 3 for each table so every one could get their hands on one to look.

Because we were so committed to our Cake being awesome we did 2 things. The first was to buy a bluetooth turntable, using this we could trigger the cake ‘reveal’ after the speeches without moving a muscle. The 2nd was to design a large No Peeking sign to sit in front of the cake to try and get people not to look (it didn’t work lol), designed in the same Galifreyan you see in our invites.

Postboxes are a very nice thing people use to collect Wedding Cards but that’s a bit boring when you consider our theme so we used a T.A.R.D.I.S ‘bin’. Complete with sound effects and lights when you open and close it. As a result kids were queuing up to pop people’s cards in the ‘bin’ lol.

As a real blessing, 1 of Mr Nerd’s clients is a Wedding and Event Company who gave us the light up love letters as a Wedding present.

Entertainment

To keep both the Adults and Kids entertained we went for something I really love, a table magician. Not only was he a magician but also a balloon artist so he was a huge success with absolutely everyone. During the speeches we even got him to make the children balloon sculptures keeping them occupied during the rather dull (for kids) speeches so unlike many Weddings we didn’t have any little ones crying or getting bored to distraction during the speeches keeping everyone happy.

Mrs Nerd’s Morning

All the months of planning, all the stress and the rather large cheques are now behind us, it’s the Wedding Day, it’s time for everything we’ve designed, bought and planned for to be put into action. Here’s kind of how it went.

The Morning

Myself and the whole Bridal Party including my Dad got ready at my parents house. It’s a nice big house so plenty of room for us all no to mention gammon sandwiches (bacon would have stank everyone’s clothes out) for everyone courtesy of my Mam. This is where David started getting some nice photos of things before the hectic side of the day began.

Aaaand Mr Nerd’s Morning

His morning wasn’t quite as fun and action packed as mine as he stayed at the venue the night before with his Best Men (2 not 1 lol). We got this as part of the package we paid for, he’s anally retentive on checking things but not that bad lol.

Him and the lads just had a bit of breakfast at the Hotel, got themselves all dressed (under Chris’ supervision lol), despite looking like a scruffy looking Nerf Herder 99% of the time Mr Nerd is a stickler for dressing right when it’s needed so was tying ties and all that jazz to make sure the lads looked great.

Sadly John took ill on the day so Carl took on all responsibilities in his place.

The Church and Service

I’ve already covered the Church and our wonderful Vicar and now it was time for actual Wedding. Our Vicar wanted us to do things a little differently so we did lol.

Our Orders of Service were, again, a T.A.R.D.I.S but with an insert. Mr Nerd thought it’d be funny to sing Always Look on the Bright Side of Life before I arrived so he had the lyrics on the insert so everyone could join in. The Vicar also gave us free reign over the music which gave us both a bit a chuckle and gave us a challenge which we gladly took the reigns of but caused a little extra work.

the Musical Director of Newcastle Cathedral

Because we chose some seriously complicated music for the Service the normal Church organist bowed out admitting straight away that they simply wouldn’t be able to do the music justice but very graciously gave us the details of someone who could. This ended up being the Musical Director of Newcastle Cathedral lol. So yes, our little Church in Ebchester ended up having one of the best organists in the Country because of our choice of music lol. But it wasn’t half a challenge getting the sheet music.

the Throne Room March from Star Wars

I walked in to the normal Wedding March (not too different I hear you cry!) and then, here’s where it gets interesting, the theme from Jurassic Park while we signed the register and as we walked out of the Church as husband and Wife, the Throne Room March from Star Wars! Told you it was different hehe. The great thing about these pieces is that they’re orchestral so suit an organ and unless you;d seen the Movies you’d have had no clue what they were and would’ve simply thought they were lovely pieces of music.

The Day Time Do

The serious bit all over and done with and now we’re…Husband and Wife or Wife and Husband or, as we prefer, Mr and Mrs Nerd.

Mr and Mrs Nerd

After the very short drive to our Venue in our Beauford we got their in the nick of time as people’s eye balls were beginning to freeze in cold Winter air. The Vicar wasn’t overly keen on confetti (because it gets in everything) so we did the confetti toss at the Venue as we got out of the car (that’s what’s in the picture).

people’s eye balls were beginning to freeze

From here and a couple of group snaps outside everyone went into the reception room for cocktails, mocktails & canapes. We were supposed to be serving miniature food ie mini gourmet hamburgers, mini pasties etc but the Venue overlooked this kind of major thing (part of our dispute with them). Despite that everyone was full of merry, saying hello to family, friends and new friends and having a welcome drink to batter off the cold outside.

After the quick rest in the reception room everyone was then ushered into the main room, past our awesome table plan (done by my awesome Aunty and Raggy Badger) and to their tables (already told you about the finishing touches).

Everything was of the normal fair until it came to the speeches where I surprised absolutely everyone by giving my own speech lol. Mr Nerd looked a little surprised to say the least because he’d already revealed the cake at the end of his speech lol.

The Cake!

Because so much work went into our cake and the fact I love cake I thought the cake deserved it’s own section.

Where do we start with the cake? It was made by the amazing Sandra from Sugarfun Cake Artistry and took her around 6 weeks to put together (that doesn’t include our design meetings and everything though). So yes, quite literally 6 weeks of work into 1 cake- and it was AMAZING! In fact some of it is on display in Sugarfun’s window. At 4foot tall it really was quite a site to see. Even the cake topper matched our outfits!

and it was AMAZING!

Because we had 2 themes we had 2 sides of the cake- 1 side Doctor Who that looked very traditional apart from the cake topper that was myself and Chris as the Doctor and Assistant (complete with our actual Wedding outfits!) and the other side completely Marvel themed. As you can see from the photos we factored in most of the favourite characters, then added in Avenger’s Tower, some Lego and to cap it all off, Stan Lee reading a DC Comic! Nothing could be truly Marvel without a cameo by Stan Lee afterall lol. This side had me as Black Widow and Chris as Iron Man for the topper.

So that’s the looks but, as we know, looks aren’t everything! The cake inside was just as good as the cake outside with 7 different flavours- Fruit Cake, Chocolate truffle with orange ganache, chocolate fudge cake, lemon meringue surprise (we got Sandra to make it T.A.R.D.I.S blue), Victoria sponge, toffee and finally chocolate truffle with nutella ganache.

UN-BEL-IEVABLE!

The Party!

I can’t really say huge amounts about the Evening Do because everything was such a blur but the main thing was our First Dance. Instead of just having some music playing with a smoke machine for effects we went another route.

the main thing was our First Dance

Mr Nerd designed a full presentation to play on a Big Screen projector with the audio output through the DJ’s PA system. The video is just there if you want to watch it and he managed to factor in absolutely everything. With a Star Warsesque intro to throw people into thinking that was our music then to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and our real song (Come and Get Your Love – Red Bone) and onto Doctor Who with the Proclaimers for everyone to join us and have a dance, all finished off with an Uptown Funk parody with the Avengers for the kids to take over the dance floor with.

the smiles and giggles it got were worth every second

As with most of the Wedding, the look on people’s faces but importantly the smiles and giggles it got were every second doing it and I doubt anyone will forget that first dance in a hurry lol.
